Hello and Welcome!

You are reading (well, maybe – it’s not clear anyone will ever read this) the result of months of unemployment and underemployment.  It’s not-uncommon story of moving to a new city to take an exciting new job, just to watch the company slalom to insolvency – rendering it unable to pay my meager wages a mere six months after I joined.  Roasting in the hot, humid New York summer, I pouted over my lot for a few months, gained weight and half-heartedly (more accurately, quarter-heartedly) looked for a new job.  All the while, though, I pondered new way to occupy my mind, use some untapped talent and maybe find a way to eke out a few dollars.  This pondering played in the background as I devoured daytime television chat shows and played computer solitaire.  Then, it struck:  it might be interesting to channel all this time towards the pursuit of what I love most.  For me – after my amazing husband – this is food and beverage consumption, followed closely by food and beverage preparation.   With a close third being words.  Food + words…..I think I’m going to have a conceptual orgasm.

But, no, I’m not a “foodie”.  I’m a “foodist”.  That is not like being a racist.  Or a sexist.  Or a fascist.  Foodism is about profound involvement with food.  I don’t often watch people on TV cooking –  that’s way too passive for me.  I cook, I seek out amazing restaurants (frequenting the ones I love), I visit food shops for fun and I create recipes.  Food is my religion.  As has been so eloquently written on http://foodists.ca, I “breathe and sleep in order to eat and drink.”

Where to start?  Well, during my 4+ years in Britain I definitely missed being able to go out and eat amazing hamburgers. London is just not a burger kind of town.  Then, I moved back to the US and found that NYC is a veritable capital of burgers.  A plethora of great spots – some renowned, some obscure, some overrated. And across a range of price points.  Is the hamburger too lowly, too humble a subject for a foodist?  Absolutely not – it’s not the simple dish people perceive it to be.  If you don’t take hamburgers seriously, you’ll get bad (or no better than mediocre) burgers.  Plus, it’s pretty much the first meal I loved as a child and, well, you never get over your first love.  So, the hamburger is where I’ll start this adventure.

In fact, the initial idea was to give this enterprise a hamburger-esque name.  But I’m nothing if not self-aware – I know that I am 100% incapable of maintaining that sort of single-minded focus.  The Short Attention Span Theater that is my mind lacks the discipline to stick to just one meal type.  So, burgers are only a starting point.

The catch:  as I run around town tasting burgers, downing too many cocktails and being distracted by sushi, curry, pasta, etc., I am also trying to lose (or at least maintain) weight.  Rather than reveal the mortifying details of my weight, height and BMI, I’ll simply say that I want to lose a bit, and certainly not gain any.  It’s food orgy meets responsible health management.  Good luck to me……
